We’ve been keeping you update weekly on Makeover Momma, regarding my husband Adam’s journey with Nutrisystem (and my own). Even though I am not personally following the plan (and strongly advise other mommas to use a balanced approach in terms of dieting), I certainly have been learning a lot when it comes to proper portion size and eating small meals frequently throughout the day.
One of the most important meals of the day is (of course) breakfast, but the majority of us mommas skip breakfast for a quick cup of coffee or an extra large lunch. Need inspiration for healthy, easy breakfast? Try these:
* A Breakfast Trail Mix: Trail mix for breakfast? We love the granola from Nutrisystem (like this Low Fat Granola Cereal), and think that a small cup of high fiber cereal, mixed with 1 oz of nuts (like almonds) and 1 oz of dried fruit (no sugar added) is another great option. Just snack…and go!
* A Breakfast Candy: The idea of chocolate or candy for breakfast might seem impossible, but try creating similar flavors by taking a chocolate rice cake, and adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of organic peanut butter. (My all time favorite is this Chef Stella Praline flavor, because it’s all natural, tastes like dessert and has less calories).
* A Breakfast Cinnamon Roll: Nutrisystem has some great options for breakfast (like their tasty Cinnamon Bun), but if you really want to fuel yourself for the day, try making tiny low calorie “Cream Cheese Cinnamon Sticks.” How is that possible? Take 1 to 2 slices of low calorie bread (aim for 100 calories or less), warm for 10 seconds in the microwave, and flatten out with a rolling pin. Next, spread a small amount of low calorie cream cheese and small dallop of healthy jam, sprinkle heavily with cinnamon, and roll the bread (so ingredients are wrapped inside). Kids will love it too!
