You’ve heard the word over and over again: “Zumba”…but what the heck is it? One of my best friends has been raving about her Zumba class and begged me to join.Â It was on Thursday mornings when I was busy, so I unfortunately had to decline.Â To be honest, I have never taken a group fitness class and had no idea what Zumba was (like most of us).Â I was nervous about working out in front of other people, and my fears from grammar school seemed to easily return- would people scrutinize me?Â What if I was doing the moves incorrectly?Â What if people were secretly making fun of my lack of rhythm and awkward movements?
I have a nasty habit of disliking things I have never tried. As a child, I â€œcouldnâ€™tâ€ like certain foods.Â My parents would tell me that I couldnâ€™t say I didnâ€™t like something unless I tried it.Â So, one of my resolutions this summer is to learn about Zumba and sign up for a class next semester.Â One of my dadâ€™s favorite mantras is â€œThe only failure is not to try.â€
And if you’re still wanting an answer to the “what the heck is it” question: Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance workout. It incorporates slow and fast rhythms with resistance training to create a fitness program that burns fat while sculpting and toning your entire body. It targets your lower body, abs, core and upper body (thatâ€™s what we like to hear in one workout!). Dancer and choreographer Alberto â€œBetoâ€ Perez founded Zumba, because he was teaching an aerobics class in Colombia and realized he had forgotten the aerobic music.Â He was forced to improvise with his own cassettes- a mix of traditional Latin salsa and meringue musicâ€¦and Zumba was born!
Donâ€™t have a gym membership or cant find the time for a Zumba class? Try these Zumba Fitness DVDs.Â The video boasts that you will burn calories at a rate of 1,000 per hour (all without having to worry about finding a babysitter!)Â According to Zumba, if you follow the regime, you will lose a dress or pant size in your first 10 days. The Fitness DVDs include Zumba Fitness Basics Workout, Zumba Fitness 20-minute Express Workout, Zumba Fitness Sculpt and Tone workout, Zumba Fitness Cardio Party Workout, and Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation Guide. Of course losing a full size in 10 days is tough for busy moms, but even if you take your time and enjoy the workouts for fun…you might surprise yourself with the results!
Caraâ€™s Craving of the Week: Confidence!
Self-confidence is an attribute I have been working towards for years now.Â My fear of failure and anxiety about being judged by others has often discouraged me from trying new things or truly being myself.Â It seems irrational to let intangible worries inhibit me from action.Â I remember when I was decorating my dorm room freshman year of college, I came across this quote by Mark Twain:Â â€œTwenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.â€ So, my new theory is that when it comes to fitness, healthy living or anything new in life: do what you have always wanted to do.Â If you make a fool of yourself, laugh it off and try again.
As Dr. Seuss said, â€œFun is good!â€ Just because you are a mom and have countless responsibilities and things to do, doesnâ€™t mean you are exempt from fun (even if it seems like it sometimes).Â On the contrary, you especially need to allot time for yourself to have fun and let loose.Â Zumbaâ€™s not only good for your body, but also good for the soul.
