Kate Hudson Dark Hair — Speedy Beauty Spotlight

Perhaps it goes without saying that the summer months are a time of light weather, lighter makeup and even lighter hair colors. Although the majority of mothers and ladies around begin to pump up their highlights and boost their blondes during the warm weather months, a variety of celebs are reversing the beauty trend. Read these tips for how to go dark the right way…

    1. Take It Slow — Switching your hair to a shockingly darker shade (a la Fergie or Britney Spears, above) may seem like a glamorous idea, but it’s important to take things slowly. Ask your stylist to weave low-lights into your overall hair color, or simply choose an all over wash that’s 1 to 2 shades darker. Try using a color depositing shampoo and conditioner created for darker locks (like Pantene Expressions Daily Color Enhancing shampoo and conditioners), to help maintain a fresh, rich shade (even in the tone-fading summer season).

    2. Protect Ends- Just because your hair is darker doesn’t mean it isn’t susceptible to damage from dying, drying and sun… so make sure to take proper care of strands. Apply a color protecting cream or spray before exposing strands to sand and surf (like Tresemme Colorthrive Lock In Creme) and wrap in a low bun before heading outdoors. The bonus to going dark in the summer is that it will help protect hair against additional damage (or that “bleached out” look), and make hair appear richer, healthier and stronger.

    3. Make It Last — If your hair is a universally flattering shade, frequent trips to the salon (or hair dye aisle) will decrease in frequency. Boost your shade in between visits (helping you save money and time as a busy mom) by trying out a brunette or dark hair glaze (like John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze in Chestnut to Espresso).
