The Workout: Core Fusion Body Sculpt
What It Is: This workout (taught by instructors Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito) is created using five 10-minute workouts for the Upper Body, Thighs, Glutes, Abs and Stretching. Celebrity mother Heidi Klum (shown above) is rumored to get her lean, long muscles from live Core Fusion classes (as does equally leggy Cameron Diaz), but now we mommas can try out the program in our own homes!
What You Do: We weren’t quite sure what to expect with this workout, because it truly is a fusion of all forms of exercise. Each 10 minute segment focuses on a different body part using movements inspired by Yoga, Pilates and ballet training (our personal favorites), and is perfect for busy moms because it requires no real equipment (other than your own body weight, and the option of light hand weights). Best of all, our toddler played happily for two full segments… which was 20 minutes of thigh and abdominal burn we certainly weren’t feeling before!
How It Feels: This workout would be intense for almost any post-partum mother (resulting in a truly deep burn throughout the muscles), but is gentle enough in pace and approach that won’t scare you away from the program. It’s fun combination of moves is great for mothers who get bored quickly, and even though our thighs were burning a few minutes in, we didn’t feel discouraged or overwhelmed because of the soft, Yoga-toned voice over giving directions. Plus, there is plenty of gentle stretching to prevent I-can’t-walk-the-next-day soreness.
Make It Harder: The easiest way to pump up the intensity of this workout would be to increase the heaviness of the weights used (during the upper body segment) as you go along, or to combine the 10 minute segments with 10 minutes of fast paced cardio. However, you should still feel proud simply getting in 10 minutes here or 10 minutes there as a mother (hey, 10 minutes of buns is better than none!)
