Create A Mediterranean Mezze With Your Kids: Sunday Snack With Johanna

Quick, simple, and satisfying…. these are all words to describe one on my favorite snacks to make for my family and unexpected guests. A mezze platter is a typical appetizer in many Mediterranean countries. Each country, region, and family has their own version of a mezze platter. I have been eating these for years and they are great for vegetarians or people with other dietary restrictions. Most ingredients can be found at your local supermarket.

Mezze Platter (adapted from Martha Stewart Everyday Food)

Ingredients (feel free to swap out food for ones you like more or that fit easily into your budget…)

* 1-2 bags of  organic pita bread (whole wheat) cut into triangles

*  2 organic lemons

*  1 jar of organic artichoke hearts

*  1 jar of  organic black Kalamata olives ( high in vitamin E )

*  1  jar of stuffed grape leaves (stuffed with rice and beef or lamb)

*  Homemade Hummus: 2 cans of organic chic peas/garbanzo beans, 2 tbsp of organic extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 cup of tahani paste, 1/2 clove of garlic. Combine together in food processor, and add salt to taste.  Chill in the refrigerator for about an hour (or just pick up store bought, organic hummus.)

*Place all foods on platter and serve ( this is something great for the kids to help with, since it involves very little “cooking”).

* A great drink to wash this down with is organic black tea with honey and mint  (serve either hot or cold) Enjoy!
